There are many genres and styles of TV shows produced in the
UK. For example, drama is common and aimed at a mature audience. Other types of
shows are period dramas, such as Peaky Blinders and Call the Midwife. A drama
is typically very serious, so it may not be appropriate for young viewers.
Dracula is
a retelling of the original vampire story:
Bram
Stoker's Gothic horror novel, Dracula, was first published in 1897. It
tells the tale of Count Dracula, a vampire from Transylvania who moves from his
home country to England in search of victims. Meanwhile, his opponents, led by
a professor named Abraham
Van Helsing, have made it their mission to put an end to his undead
curse. This bloodcurdling campaign ends with the destruction of the evil
vampire.
Since its publication, Dracula has become an enduring classic in
the genre of Gothic horror. Its characters have gone on to become archetypal
versions in popular culture. Count Dracula is viewed as the quintessential
vampire, and Abraham Van Helsing is regarded as the iconic vampire hunter. The
novel is still in print today and has been adapted to film more than thirty
times. It is now a part of the public domain.
Peaky
Blinder is a period crime drama:
Peaky
Blinder is a period-crime show set in the immediate post-World War I
period. Though it shares some motifs with the similarly-themed Downton Abbey,
Peaky Blinder takes its place in the inner city of Birmingham. The gang is led
by Thomas Shelby, a returning war hero with lofty goals.
Peaky Blinders is created by Steven Knight. It is
co-produced by Caryn
Mandabach and Tiger Aspect. Among Knight's other notable works are
Closed Circuit, Dirty Pretty Things, and Eastern Promises. Considering his
background, he needed a co-producer to bring this period drama to the screen.
Call the Midwife is a period drama:
Call the Midwife is a period
drama that centres on the lives of working class women and mothers. It is an
adaptation of Jennifer Worth's memoirs and is set in 1950s East End London. It
follows a newly qualified midwife, Jenny, as she joins the eccentric nuns of
Nonnatus House. Though she initially feels intimidated by the nuns, Jenny soon
develops incredible friendships with them.
The show deals with universal topics. The audience is easily
able to identify with the characters and the world of the show. It's a period
drama, but it also has contemporary themes. The characters face economic,
social, and emotional
challenges as they work to make a living. They also face unique
challenges during the birthing process.
Anne is a
drama about a mother's campaign for justice:
Anne is a new drama about a mother's campaign for UK justice
after the Hillsborough disaster. It will be broadcast on ITV for four
consecutive nights from 2 January. The drama will follow the life of campaigner
Anne Williams, who lost her son Kevin in the disaster. She refused to accept
the original Hillsborough verdict and pursued a new investigation. In the
process, she tracked down witnesses and medical experts and lobbied ministers
for a new inquest. The series will follow the campaign for justice for over 20
years.
Anne is an intense portrait
of a mother's campaign for justice after her son Kevin Williams died in
a football stadium in 1989. The film follows Anne for two decades as she
confronts political corruption, police lies and an indifferent judiciary. It is
a compelling tale of a mother's love and how goodness endures amidst cruel
and cynical power structures.
Anne is a
comedy:
Netflix announced it is bringing Anne to the small screen.
The new comedy series is created by Nick Stoller and Francesca Delbanco, who
have previously worked on the hit shows Neighbors, Forgetting Sarah Marshall,
and Get Him To The Greek. The show centers around a group of Harvard friends
who are now in their 40s. It will debut in the fall of this year in New York.
Anne Peake plays the mother of a Hillsborough
victim. Peake's performance is like a shivering scream. The character
starts out as a normal Liverpool mum, but after surprising her son Kevin with a
ticket to a Hillsborough match, she turns into a triple threat. She is
tenacious and interrogative, and a fierce advocate for the truth.
Black
Mirror is a sci-fi series:
Black Mirror is a sci-fi anthology
series from the UK that delves into a variety of genres. Some episodes
are dark and experimental, while others are more lighthearted. The series won
the International Emmy(r) Award for Best TV Movie/Mini-Series in 2012. It can
be difficult to watch, but it's worth it for the many themes it explores. Fans
of The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Jackanory, and Tales From the Darkside
will find Black Mirror highly entertaining.
The title of the series comes from the blackened digital screens of technology that are the subjects of the show. While some episodes are darker, some use satire to make a point. In "Crocodile," an episode about murder and a television that can be controlled with the touch of a button, the story has an undercurrent of irony. A hidden piece of tech waits to incriminate the protagonist, which makes the episode less subtle, but in retrospect it proves to be prophetic.
